When did you first fall in love with dogs?
I fell in love with dogs around the age of 4 when my parents decided to bring a Great Dane home. His name was Ajax and we were the best of friends. My mom had to constantly tell me I could not ride Ajax as if he were a horse!
Tell us about your dogs.
Mary Jane is a 17-year-old Lhasa Apso/Maltese mix, Cooper is a nine-year-old Sheltie, and Maddie is an eight-year-old Sheltie.
What is your favorite breed/type of dog and why?
I am drawn towards Shelties the most; I love how intensely loyal they are. My parents now have a Sheltie as well and it is a lot of fun to get them all together! I am fond of mixed breed dogs as well, especially since having Mary Jane. Although she is 17, she still gives her brother and sister a run for their money!
How do you feel dogs impact humans’ lives?
Dogs are constant companions and stress relievers for humans. Several studies have shown that the simple act of stroking a dog can reduce blood pressure and relieve stress. After a long day at work, I can’t wait to cuddle with all three of my munchkins. Who needs Calgon when you have dogs?!
What is your favorite thing about having dogs in your family?
My husband and I adore each of our dogs and enjoy how each one has their own unique and quirky personality.
How long have you owned and operated Rebecca & Drew?
For two and a half years. We opened our doors just two days before Hurricane Ike!
We know that you take your pups to work as often as possible. How does having your dog with you change your workday?
I mostly bring Mary Jane to work with me, and I know she enjoys it as much as I do! She patiently waits for me to say “MJ ready to go to work?” and then makes a bee line for the car. Having her at the store is like having your best friend with you all day. The customers always enjoy when she is here and they often stop by just to say hello to her.
Do you choose where to shop/dine based on their pet policy?
On a recent visit to New York, I loved how dogs were welcome at most places and even department stores. Hopefully Houston will get there soon.
In an ideal world, what would you see the role of dogs being?
I would like to see more companies allow employees to bring their dogs to work, even if just one day a week! We spend so much of our time at work, wouldn’t it be a nice perk?
What animal groups do you support or advocate for?
For a long time I did pet therapy with Maddie at Caring Critters, and I found it very rewarding. However, after starting my own business, I no longer could dedicate the time. It is a wonderful organization. I have supported both Houston Pet Set and SNAP, and I’m currently seeking to do more in the animal community.
If you could describe your feeling for dogs in one word, what would that be?
Thankful.
